Which shooting glasses should you choose?
SwissEye: interchangeable lenses in one set
For a straightforward set that covers different light conditions, start with SwissEye Raptor. Smoke, clear and orange lenses are included, and the adjustable temple length and angle help you position the frame. It is a practical choice if you want to change lenses rather than buy separate pairs for indoor and outdoor use.
Nighthawk has soft, flat temples for comfort under ear defenders and adds a case to the three-lens package. Blackhawk also comes with three lenses, plus a retention strap, microfibre bag and case. Choose between them primarily by fit and the accessories you want to carry.
ESS: a useful choice for regular range use
The ESS Crossbow ONE offers interchangeable lenses with ClearZone FlowCoat treatment to reduce fogging and scratching. Choose your starting lens in Clear or Smoke Gray. If you spend long sessions wearing ear defenders, we recommend looking at the Crossbow Suppressor ONE: its extra-thin temples are specifically designed to reduce pressure beneath the ear cups and minimise interference with their seal.
Gatorz: aluminium frames or a larger shield lens
For shooting eyewear with an everyday sunglasses shape, consider Gatorz Sentix. Its adjustable nosepiece and thin temples let you refine the fit, with Smoke, Photochromic and selected OPZ lens options in our range. Choose the exact MILSPEC Ballistic version when you need ballistic protection; a familiar frame name or dark lens alone does not establish its rating.
Prefer a larger, interchangeable shield? Blastshield uses Gatorz's ICM clamp for lens changes. The Blastshield B2 adds a wider lens wrap, ventilation and a higher cheek cut. The DAA VICTOR set combines clear, yellow and dark smoke lenses with an EVA case and an optical-insert frame. For general safety-eyewear needs, 3M Maxim offers adjustable temples and nose pads, while Bollé STKS 420 has integrated side shields and PLATINUM anti-fog and anti-scratch treatment on the listed clear and smoke options. These safety-glasses choices should not be treated as having the same ballistic specification as a MILSPEC model.
Choose the lens for the light you shoot in
- Clear: our starting recommendation for indoor ranges and low-light conditions where you want minimal darkening.
- Smoke: useful for bright outdoor sessions. SwissEye sets include a smoke lens alongside lighter alternatives.
- Orange or yellow: an alternative tint to try when you prefer more contrast. SwissEye sets use orange; DAA VICTOR includes yellow.
- Photochromic: available on selected Gatorz variants. These lenses darken in response to UV light, helping when outdoor brightness changes. The change is not instant, and UV-blocking vehicle windscreens can prevent normal darkening.
For a set you can switch between indoor and outdoor use, compare a SwissEye three-lens package with the Gatorz Blastshield Smoke and Clear Bundle. A single-lens Blastshield option does not include the second lens simply because the frame accepts replacements.
Fit your glasses with the rest of your range kit
Try shooting glasses together with the ear defenders you actually wear. The frame should stay secure without pushing the lenses against your eyelashes or creating uncomfortable pressure at the temples. Thin arms help, but the complete combination matters: check that your ear cushions still sit properly around your ears. Keep glasses and spare lenses in their supplied pouch or case when packing your range bag. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions to preserve lens coatings; anti-fog treatment reduces misting but cannot guarantee a fog-free lens in every condition. Check the selected lens and frame option for current availability before ordering.
Shooting glasses: questions before you buy
SwissEye Raptor, Nighthawk and Blackhawk accept the optional RX Clip 62101. An optician fits your prescription lenses into that insert, which sits behind the protective outer lens. The clip and prescription glazing are separate from the standard SwissEye sets. This is the route we recommend considering if you want to keep interchangeable outer lenses.
The DAA VICTOR package includes an optical-insert frame, but not prescription lenses. Ask us about insert availability before ordering a system that depends on one. Do not assume ordinary prescription glasses can simply be worn underneath any close-fitting shooting frame.
No. The collection includes safety eyewear, ballistic configurations and an eyewear case. For example, Gatorz Wraith has both Regular and MILSPEC Ballistic options; the rating of the ballistic version must not be applied to the Regular one. ESS Crossbow ONE in Smoke Gray is documented to MIL-PRF-32432A, while the SwissEye models have their own listed military and safety standards.
ANSI Z87.1, EN 166 and military ballistic specifications are different tests, not interchangeable labels. Buy the exact frame-and-lens configuration that meets your range or workplace requirements. Ballistic eyewear is tested against specified fragment impacts; it is not bulletproof protection.
No. ONE means one assembled frame with one lens. Our standard Crossbow ONE choices are Clear and Smoke Gray. The Suppressor ONE listing also offers Hi-Def Copper and includes a microfibre pouch and retention strap. The lenses are interchangeable, but spare lenses are not included just because you can change them. For several lens colours in one purchase, consider the SwissEye sets instead.
Choose photochromic if you prefer to leave one lens fitted while outdoor light changes. Our Gatorz Sentix and Rig listings include Photochromic options. Choose an interchangeable set if you want to select a clear or tinted lens yourself before a session: SwissEye sets provide three colours, while Blastshield offers a Smoke and Clear Bundle. With photochromic lenses, allow time for the tint to adjust rather than expecting an immediate change between bright and dark areas.
Some models are designed for occupational eye protection as well. Start with 3M Maxim or Bollé STKS 420 for general safety-eyewear needs. The right choice depends on the actual hazard and the markings on the selected version. Open safety spectacles are not a substitute for sealed goggles or a face shield where the task requires those. A shooting or tactical label alone does not establish suitability for every job.
