A well-fitted plate carrier should hold compatible protective plates securely while allowing comfortable breathing and movement. Start with plate size and carrier fit, then add only the equipment you need. This guide explains what to check and compares the different starting points offered by Husar Duke, Husar Noble, Hexatac HPC² and Direct Action SPITFIRE MK II.
Proper Plate Placement and Sizing
A carrier worn too low may leave the intended upper-chest area uncovered. Select ballistic plates of an appropriate size, then follow the carrier and plate manufacturers' fitting guidance.
- The Front Plate: Position the top edge of the front plate at the jugular notch – the soft spot where your collarbones meet the sternum. A plate that sits too low reduces intended upper-chest coverage; one that sits too high can press against the neck and restrict movement.
- The Back Plate: Center the rear plate on your upper back. Follow the carrier and plate manufacturers’ fitting instructions; the correct position depends on plate size and individual anatomy.
- Centering: Ensure the carrier is centered horizontally. A plate that shifts to the side leaves the vitals exposed during lateral movement and can unbalance your entire loadout.
Choosing a Plate Carrier: Husar, Hexatac or Direct Action?
The right starting point is the carrier that fits your plates, body and intended equipment. ESTTAC's range includes different approaches to modularity: a minimal base, an integrated organiser, or a platform built around interchangeable panels. These are feature-based comparisons, not a claim that one carrier will feel best on every body.
Husar Duke: a minimal, low-profile base
The Husar Duke keeps the base simple, with Cordura 500D IRR construction and Swift Clip attachment points for compatible front panels. It is worth considering when you want to keep bulk down. The trade-off is that padding and storage depend on the accessories you choose; a light base does not automatically make a fully equipped carrier light.
Husar Noble: integrated organisation and modular expansion
The Husar Noble adds a built-in admin panel with an elastic organiser, rear panel zippers and attachment options for compatible comfort pads. It suits a setup where you want more organisation built into the carrier. Additional panels and padding still increase the total weight, bulk and cost, so compare the complete configuration rather than the base alone.
Hexatac HPC²: adjustable shoulders and a versatile front panel
The Hexatac HPC² combines removable, repositionable shoulder straps with MOLLE and hook-and-loop attachment on the front. Its integrated admin pocket includes an LVMS mounting matrix for small-item organisation. This makes it an option to consider if shoulder positioning and the choice between direct-mounted pouches and a removable placard matter to you.
Check before buying: the base includes the front and rear plate bags, shoulder straps and elastic shoulder sleeves; the cummerbund is separate. The HPC² Structural QR Cummerbunds and AYCE Modular Placard are separate options. Budget for the finished carrier. Check the exact back-panel size and zipper interface before combining brands.
Direct Action SPITFIRE MK II: a streamlined modular platform
The Direct Action SPITFIRE MK II uses laminate, Cordura 500D and softshell materials. Its pared-back exterior includes a large front loop panel, a top-access zipped pocket and a rear designed for SPITFIRE back panels. It is a useful starting point if you prefer a simple base and want to choose the storage around it.
Check before buying: a minimalist cummerbund is included, but a front flap is not. Alternative cummerbunds, comfort pads and back panels are separate purchases. Consider the SPITFIRE MK II Rapid Access Cummerbund if that fastening system suits your needs. Select the carrier size for your exact plates, not your usual clothing size.
Before you order: confirm plate height, width, cut and thickness; cummerbund sizing; front-panel fasteners; and which components are included. A plate carrier alone does not provide ballistic protection. If you already own plates or accessories, send ESTTAC their model names and dimensions so compatibility can be checked before you buy.

Achieving the Correct Fit
A plate carrier should follow the shape of your torso; it must be tight enough to prevent bouncing during a sprint but loose enough to allow for a full breath. A carrier that shifts during movement not only causes chafing but also alters your center of gravity, leading to faster fatigue.
Once your plates are inserted, adjust the shoulder straps first to set the vertical height. Next, tighten the cummerbund to secure the unit against your torso. If the carrier shifts when you jump or move laterally, it is too loose. If you cannot take a full breath, loosen the cummerbund slightly. Remember that most modern plate carriers and accessories are modular. You should use this to your advantage by adjusting the rear cummerbund attachment points to find your specific sweet spot for tension and stability.
Gear Distribution and Pouch Layout
Once the carrier fits your frame, distribute your gear based on the work-space principle. This means keeping the front of your carrier as slim as possible to allow for a low prone position and unhindered arm movement.

Ammunition and Magazines
Keep your primary ammunition central and easily accessible with either hand. Using a Husar Hybrid Rifle Front Flap allows you to maintain a slim profile while keeping magazines indexed for rapid reloads. If you use placards, adding a Panneltac Blade Platform between the carrier and the insert can provide additional mounting points for small tools or knives without adding unnecessary bulk to your silhouette.
Medical Gear and IFAKs
Medical equipment is non-negotiable and must be reachable with either hand. The Blackfolium RIFAK Horizontal is one option for this, as it mounts to the rear or bottom of the carrier, keeping the front clear for your workspace while remaining accessible in an emergency. For a deeper look at essential life-saving components, refer to our guide on tactical medical gear for first responders.
Administrative and Utility Items
Avoid gear creep – the tendency to add pouches simply because there is available MOLLE space. If you need extra storage for gloves, maps, or small electronics, a Helikon Guardian Dangler Pouch utilizes the space below your front plate. This keeps the weight central and low, but still adds weight and may affect movement or seated comfort.
Mission-Specific Refinement
Your setup should evolve based on your environment and threat level. A home defense setup may only require plates and a single magazine, whereas a duty setup for professional use will require more bags and pouches for communication, hydration, and specialized tools.
Always test your setup by dry-firing and practicing transitions from your primary weapon to your sidearm. Ensure your carrier does not snag on your belt or holster – and check the complete configuration rather than judging individual components in isolation. Check product availability and the delivery options for your destination.
